RTD A Line nightly surfacing work planned Oct. 21 through early November

RTD Staff

On Oct. 21, RTD will begin a program to smooth commuter rail track along the A Line between Union Station and Denver Airport Station. This work is expected to continue through early November.

The planned surfacing work will take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sundays through Fridays, with possible work on Friday and Saturday nights, for approximately three weeks, weather permitting.

Train operators are required to sound horns under circumstances that require additional safety precautions, such as when traveling through a work area.

As part of the planned surfacing program, some weekend work will involve significant adjustments to train schedules and frequencies. Customers are encouraged to use RTD’s Next Ride web app to plan their trip, view other options and receive Service Alerts. Plan ahead and prepare for extra time for bus shuttle transfers to or from the airport.

Saturday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 27: Crews will conduct grade crossing work at Havana Street Crossing that will involve single-tracking trains with all boarding on Track 2 at Central Park and Peoria stations. The work will take place beginning at the start of service. Trains will operate at 30-minute frequencies with four-car train sets. Customers should plan for 10-minute delays on westbound trips.

Following completion of the work, the first train planned to operate from Union Station to Denver Airport Station will depart Union Station at 1 p.m. The first train from Denver Airport Station to Union Station is expected to depart at 1:57 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 2: From start of service through approximately 4 p.m., crews will perform track surfacing work between Peoria and Denver Airport stations. Trains will operate at 15-minute frequencies between Union Station and Peoria Station. Bus shuttles will be in place to continue travel between Peoria and Denver Airport stations.

On Nov. 2, bus shuttles will board at the following locations:

  • Peoria Station – Gate E
  • 40th Avenue and Airport·Gateway Park Station – Gate A
  • 61st·Peña Station – Board next to the platform
  • Denver Airport Station – Gate 6

Running multiple trains across the lines throughout the day inevitably leads to shifting and settling of the ballast, the rocks beneath the tracks. To protect trains, tracks and customers, RTD includes regular surfacing as part of its overall maintenance program. The program corrects the rail alignment for a smoother ride and is essential for delivering safe and reliable transit service.

RTD thanks its customers for their patience as the agency works to make lives better through connections.
